Photography course in St Albans

Take control of your DSLR: Learn to shoot in manual mode and make the most of your equipment! This course is aimed at  beginners who want to learn to take great photos with their digital SLR.

When? The course will run for 5 weeks starting Wednesday 12th September 2012, every Wednesday morning at 9:30-11:30am in my own home in St Albans.

Who? I will be teaching the class and places will be strictly limited to a maximum of 6 participants to make sure everyone gets as much as possible out of the class. There are no prerequisites for this course but you will need a digital SLR (Canon or Nikon) and if you have more than one lens please bring them along to the course. If you don’t yet own a DSLR camera but are thinking or purchasing one please do take a look at my “What starter DSLR camera?” page.

How? The first 4 sessions will be classroom based and the last session will be a hands-on practical session, shooting outdoors if the weather permits. There will be assignments each week which will require 1 to 2 hours of your own time outside of the class. The more work you put into this course, the more you will get out of it!

Kind words (and beautiful pictures!) from past students:

lisa Photography course in St Albans“Before the course I had very recently asked for and been given a DSLR for Christmas. The manual was impenetrable and my best hope was to shoot in automatic mode and hope for the best. Steph’s course was perfect – Steph explained all the essentials for mastering my DSLR one step at a time without making it at all daunting. In class and with homework we put each step into practice and before long we were all taking pictures that our friends and family couldn’t believe we’d taken.”
    Lisa L, St Albans
nina1 Photography course in St Albans“My expectations of this course were far exceeded in every way and this investment has been worth every penny. Stephanie you are wonderful at explaining how the camera works and how this translates into much improved photographs. I would 100% recommend this course to friends and everyone I know has been so impressed with the change in my photographs.”
    Nina M, Hemel Hempstead
sarah2 Photography course in St Albans“The classes with Steph have been fantastic. I had only ever used my SLR camera on auto before and taken really mediocre shots. I really wanted to get better at taking shots of the children in particular; this course gave me the confidence to experiment a bit more, feel like I know what I am doing a bit more and to actually take some pretty decent shots!! I highly recommend it.”
    Sarah P, St Albans
anna s1 Photography course in St Albans“Absolutely thrilled with the course, it was easy to follow, great weekly challenges, Stephanie gave great feedback on my photos and we even had a cuppa waiting for us when we arrived!
I can’t believe the difference this has made to my photographs, thank you so much Steph!”
    Anna S, St Albans
frances1 Photography course in St Albans“Your course was a fantastic experience Stephanie!! The format was enjoyable and informative, practical sessions helped put the knowledge into practise and the 30 day challenge that followed was a fantastic way of improving on the skills you taught us. I can pick up my camera now and decide how best to capture the shot, rather than rely on the settings… Thank you so much. P.S. the tea and fresh croissants each morning were the cherry on the cake!!”
    Frances H, Hoddesdon
brigitta Photography course in St Albans“Stephanie Belton’s class is the perfect place to go for people who want to progress with their photographic skill. Actually no matter where you are at it, Stephanie will bring to you information, which you might have missed. About your camera and what a good picture can look like. You will leave the course feeling, like you’ve definitely learned something good. I sure am very thankful to Madame Belton and will always follow her work from now onwards. Great stuff!”
    Brigitta S, Hertfordshire
annab Photography course in St Albans“I approached the course with some trepidation, having had no experience of DSLR photography whatsoever. Although I still have much to learn, Steph’s course took my photography to a new level in just five weeks. My photography improved immeasurably, exceeding all my expectations. The way the course was taught means that I won’t forget what I’ve learned, so I have gained a skill I can build on.
Importantly, it also provided me with huge enthusiasm to do so. I would recommend Steph’s course to anyone, even if you’ve never picked up a DSLR before!”
    Anna B, St Albans
gail2 Photography course in St Albans“I thought your course was fantastic. I learnt so much and your delivery and explanations were just spot-on. Thanks you so much Steph!”
    Gail H, St Albans
juliet Photography course in St Albans“I had the gear (posh camera) but no idea … and how life has changed for me now, I DO have an idea of what I am doing, and more than that, I made 6 wonderful new friends to share a new found hobby. Thank you Steph for teaching me the ways of photography and for enabling me to catch that glint in my boys eyes, there isn’t a price that you can put on that, and seeing the world through the camera lense is a privilege actually! The best thing I have done for me for a long long time.”
    Juliet J, Harpenden
“I’ve just completed Stephanie’s first photography course and I’m so pleased with what I have learned. I’ve gone from being totally clueless about using my DSLR to feeling that I have a good working knowledge for taking the kind of pictures that I am interested in. The small group size worked well and it felt like we had plenty of individual attention. I really enjoyed the weekly meetings, and the ongoing feedback and support from Stephanie on the photos that we are all taking is great. If there are any follow on courses in the future I would definitely be interested!”
    Rachel M, St Albans
“I’ve attended a few photographic courses and none of them did what they said so I was coming away very disappointed and was starting to lose hope of ever getting to grips with my SLR. Then I spotted Stephanie’s course and thought I would have one last go at it – the class was small Stephanie had a way of teaching that made everything click (sorry about the pun) she has a lovely manner about her and her classes were fun. I now have a much better understanding of what I’m doing and when things go wrong I understand why. Thank you Stephanie x”
    Cate B, Stevenage
“Before going on the course, taking pictures with my DSLR was a bit hit and miss. I mostly used the fully automatic setting and would get a couple of good shots every so often. After only the first lesson on the course, I already had a lot more control and by the end I felt confident in manual setting! The course was fantastic. It was well structured and each week Stephanie introduced new techniques building on the skills learnt in the previous week. Thanks to Stephanie, I haven’t put my camera down since!”
    Mei L, St Albans
