Newborn Baby Photographer St Albans

My approach to newborn and baby photography

When looking for a newborn photographer in St Albans to capture your brand new baby you are really spoilt for choice. The good news is that we all have our own style, so you can find the photographer to suit you. Some photographers use a studio, some come to your home, some will pose the baby into curled up positions and some will simply go with the flow. So when it comes to choosing your newborn photographer, it is worth doing a little bit of research depending on the look you are after for your photos.

Because I don’t pose the baby, I don’t really need to photograph them within the first few days after the birth. In fact, I actually prefer it when the baby is a little bit more alert (from 3-4 weeks) so that we can have more chance of getting a nice selection of “awake” shots. It does also give us more flexibility in terms of booking the session and it gives you and your baby a little bit more time to settle down after the birth.

The session takes place in the comfort of your own home and my style is very relaxed. I strongly encourage the whole family to get into the photos, not just your baby!

Would you like to enquire about booking a newborn baby session? Drop me a line, I’d love to help.

Are you a friend or family member looking for a wonderful gift for new parents? I can prepare a newborn photography gift voucher which will give parents and child memories to cherish.

My own favourite childhood images are the ones featuring my mum and dad too, so even if you’re a little bit camera shy, it is so worth capturing those special moments for your baby.

frequently asked questions

Where does the session take place ?

Window light is beautiful for portraiture and very much part of my style. I photograph my clients in their own home, and for newborn babies and toddlers, I almost always take some of the shots in the master bedroom or spare room, for a cosy feel and family cuddles.

How long are the sessions ?

My sessions usually last between one and two hours depending on the age of the baby and their mood on the day. For newborn babies, we often need a bit longer to allow for feeds. I try to time the shoots to coincide with a window where your baby isn’t too tired or hungry, for example just after a morning nap.

what area do you cover / do you travel ?

I am based in St Albans but photograph newborn babies and older babies in my client’s homes throughout Hertfordshire.

How much do you charge?

I charge a session fee of £99 for weekdays and £149 for weekend sessions. Please note that this is to cover my time and does not include any print or digital images.

Once you’ve had your session, you can decide on which photo package you would like to purchase. Prices start at £249 for 3 images and my most popular package is the full set of images in digital format priced at £599. Click here to see my full price list.

How do I book?

Simply fill in the contact form below and I will get back to you with my suggested dates and all the information necessary to confirm your booking.

What's the best age to photograph babies ?

Good question! I sometimes get panicked phone calls from mums worried they have missed the 2 week window for their newborn photo session. My posing style for baby shots is very relaxed, and as much as I find sleeping babies adorable, I do love taking photos of them when they
are awake and alert.  Take a look at my approach to newborn and baby photography for pros and cons of different ages, from birth to crawling and walking.

How far in advance do i need to book?

My availability very much depends on the time of year, the high season being April-November. During my busiest time, weekend sessions are often booked 2-3 months ahead and weekday sessions 2-3 weeks ahead. Please contact me for availability in case I have a last-minute cancellation, I might be able to squeeze you in!

Do you provide props ?

I sometimes get asked this question for maternity or newborn sessions. The short answer is no, because my style is very much about capturing
your family as you are but if there is anything you’d like to include in the shoot (a special birth present or toy that your child loves) then by all means let me know and we can incorporate this in the session.

we are very camera-shy , will it be painful?

So many of my clients warn me that they are camera shy, and I must admit, it’s quite rare for me to come across an excited dad when I first arrive on my shoots. The good news is that the focus will never be on you directly, it’s all about the children and their interaction with you. I have photographed hundreds of families over the years and I promise to make the session as relaxed and enjoyable as possible for everyone.

What should we wear?

I recommend you wear something that makes you feel good, ideally avoiding big logos and patterns as they can detract from the faces. Plain, neutral colours with a bit of texture tend to work really well for baby photo sessions.

Will you tell us how to pose ?

I will gently direct you into the right light and sometimes advise on how to sit/stand to get the most flattering angle. I will guide you through various set ups to ensure we can capture the connection with your baby in the most beautiful way.

“I cannot recommend Stephanie enough! My husband and I wanted family photos with our 6-week old baby. Our baby was a little fussy the day of the photo shoot. Stephanie was so patient and very helpful with little tips and tricks to help soothe the baby. She gave us direction on where to stand and sit and made the whole experience very easy. We are in love with our photos!
