What you will learn
I have been running this photography course in St Albans for just over 9 years now and it has proved hugely popular with anyone wishing to get to grips with their DSLR. It is aimed at beginners who want to learn to take better photos by getting to know their camera better, but also by working on composition and light.
This beginner photography course is perfect for you if:
- You’re looking to learn a new hobby or skill in a friendly and supportive environment
- You’d like to reconnect with a creative passion and be inspired to create beautiful, lasting images you can feel proud of
- You feel frustrated that you’re not currently making the most from your photography equipment
If you would like to learn how to make the most of your camera and capture brilliant shots then you will benefit from these small and friendly groups of up to 6 participants. All sessions are Covid-safe and run in line with current government guidelines.
Here are some of the topics we will cover during our 5-week photography course.
- Shooting in Manual mode by understanding the exposure triangle: the relationship between Aperture, Shutter speed and ISO setting
- The impact of the lens/focal length on your image
- How to recognise the different types of light and understand white balance
- Focusing techniques for sharper pictures
- How to compose your photos to create really compelling images, these skills are so valuable as they can be applied regardless of your equipment, including the camera on your phone
There are no prerequisites for this course but you will need a digital SLR (Canon or Nikon) or any camera with an interchangeable lens such as Panasonic Lumix, Olympus, Fuji, Sony and if you have more than one lens please bring them along to the course.
Photography course in St Albans
The class will be taking place in my home in St Albans, Hertfordshire (near the Quadrant in Marshalswick). I will be teaching the class and places will be limited to a maximum of 6 participants to make sure everyone gets as much as possible out of the class, and also to ensure we can observe social distancing.
The first 4 sessions will be classroom-based and the last session will be a hands-on practical session, shooting outdoors if the weather permits. There will be assignments each week that will require 1 to 2 hours of your own time outside of the class. The more work you put into this course, the more you will get out of it!
The course will run for consecutive for 4 weeks Monday evenings 8:15-10:15pm starting 25th April 2022. The 5th and final session will take place at the weekend to make the most of the natural light, on a date to suit all the participants.
To reserve your spot on the course, please select your preferred slot at the top of this page and press “Add to Basket”.
Please note that the course fee is non-refundable unless another person is found to take your place. We’ll be covering a lot of ground each week so I recommend you only sign up for the course if you are able to attend all five sessions.
If group sessions aren’t for you or you can’t commit to a 5-week course, I also offer one-to-one photography tuition tailored to your particular needs.
Before the course I had very recently asked for and been given a DSLR for Christmas. The manual was impenetrable and my best hope was to shoot in automatic mode and hope for the best. Steph’s course was perfect – Steph explained all the essentials for mastering my DSLR one step at a time without making it at all daunting. In class and with homework we put each step into practice and before long we were all taking pictures that our friends and family couldn’t believe we’d taken.
Stephanie Belton’s photography course is the perfect place to go for people who want to progress with their photographic skill. Actually no matter where you are at with your photography, Stephanie will bring fill in the gaps and get you to the next level. You will leave the course feeling, like you’ve definitely learned something good. I sure am very thankful to Madame Belton and will always follow her work from now onwards. Great stuff!
The classes with Stephanie have been fantastic. I had only ever used my SLR camera on auto before and taken really mediocre shots. I really wanted to get better at taking shots of the children in particular; this course gave me the confidence to experiment a bit more, feel like I know what I am doing a bit more and to actually take some pretty decent shots!! I highly recommend it!
I approached the course with some trepidation, having had no experience of DSLR photography whatsoever. Although I still have much to learn, Steph’s course took my photography to a new level in just five weeks. My photography improved immeasurably, exceeding all my expectations. The way the course was taught means that I won’t forget what I’ve learned, so I have gained a skill I can build on. Importantly, it also provided me with huge enthusiasm to do so. I would recommend Steph’s course to anyone, even if you’ve never picked up a DSLR before!
My expectations of this course were far exceeded in every way and this investment has been worth every penny. Stephanie you are wonderful at explaining how the camera works and how this translates into much improved photographs. I would 100% recommend this course to friends and everyone I know has been so impressed with the change in my photographs.
Absolutely thrilled with the course, it was easy to follow, great weekly challenges, Stephanie gave great feedback on my photos and we even had a cuppa waiting for us when we arrived! I can’t believe the difference this has made to my photographs, thank you so much Steph!
